Story So Far

50 years ago, the Bloodspear Army swept through the Nentir Vale, destroying the major cities and slaughtering the standing armies of the land. After tearing the land apart, the army seemed to scatter and the region was left in ruins. The few remaining villages today barely scrape by each winter. Roving bands of monsters keep travel & trade extremely dangerous. Yet, near the ruins of the town of Fastormel, a small beacon of light remained. A Mage School was founded in the Mistborn tower, run by the few young mages who escaped slaughter in the war.

Just a few weeks ago, that school was still being run in secret from the rest of the world. That all changed the day the Kobolds attacked. First, a ghost-like figure was spotted flying towards the tower, and passing through it’s walls into the upper floors. Before the alarm could be sounded, a massive army consisting of thousands of Kobolds attacked. While a single Kobold is hardly a threat to a Mage, the sheer numbers of the attack proved to be disastrous.

Inside the tower, two thieves found themselves caught up in the attack, when all they wanted was to escape with the tower’s prized treasure, a magical amulet. One of the thieves, Alamir, was a former student of the school, though he never took to his studies like his brother Syrion did. The other thief, Ella, was only stealing to provide food for her starving family. Both were on their first mission for the thieves guild of the region, the Grey Daggers.

A group of students (Syrion, along with two elven cousins Murk & Milo), tower guardians (the grounds-keeper Polonia and a knight named Gilgamesh), and the two thieves were fighting off a group of Kobolds inside the tower when they spotted the ghost. It had made it’s way to the treasure room and was stealing the amulet. It escaped through the ceiling, while the tower’s final defenses fell. At the last moment, the group managed to escape along with one of the tower’s teachers, Sir Aian Wolfbane.

The group made their way through the tower’s secret underground escape route, where they found an ancient guardian, Ramuh, a Dragonborn paladin who had been magically sealed in the passage ages ago to protect it in times of need. It took them several weeks to traverse the long caverns and dungeons, along the way slaying a young beholder (much to the anger of it’s father) and discovering a small group of Grey Daggers who had taken up residence at the exit to the caves.

When the escapees finally exited the passage, they found themselves on the far side of the Dawnforge Mountains. Here, they discovered that the Bloodspear army had never really scattered. It had simply been held at bay by an army of Dwarves, for whom the war had continued for the past half century. The group agreed to help defend the mountain fortress of Hammerfast as the Bloodspears broke through to the Dwarves’ last defenses. The heroes were able to beat back the first wave of attacks from the Orcs, Goblins, and Gnolls. However, this victory was short lived, as a great explosion ripped through one of the Dwarven outposts…

Entry #1 - Beren's Journal

From the journal of Beren, son of Baror, Scout of Hammerfast

After a lifetime of fighting, I find it difficult to explain what occurred today. It may be best to start at the beginning.

A group of outsiders, mages and warriors of many races, arrived at our keep just as the Bloodspears were threatening to break through our final defenses. I hear now that they were refugees from a Kobold attack to the North-West, but that is hardly important now. When they first arrived, they came to our aid and beat back the first wave of the enemy army. I was away from the frontlines, but the stories of that battle are already added to the city’s favorite drunken tales.

What happened next isn’t entirely clear to me, but between the waves of Bloodspears beating down our door, the group met in secret to form a plan. During that meeting, it is said that one of the mages turned on their leader and attacked him. In the end, both men were dead. Yet despite that tragedy, the outsiders still came to our aid.

Every dwarf strong enough to lift an axe rejoined the front lines. I was placed directly in General Alpen’s command. He is a great warrior and a tribute to his ancestors. Even when the south flank fell, he kept our forces rallied and we were able to beat the monsters back. I had not seen the horrors of battle on this grand a scale before, but I found the strength to push forward and protect our ancient home.

While we held back the Goblins and Orcs trying to break through into the Vale, the outsiders had magically teleported to fight the Storm Chieftain himself. When we saw the enemy positions in the rear begin to scatter, a cheer went up like I have never heard. We knew the outsiders had done it. We slaughtered the Bloodspears as fear ran through their ranks. By nightfall, every monster from that horde was dead or fled. The outsiders were welcomed back to the city as heroes and the king declared, for the first time in half a century, that Hammerfast was at peace.
